6 Essential Steps in Setting Intention

Intention is a key we need in this life. It will determine every decision we make and even lead us to be a specific kind of person. You will also need intention to make your life better. And speaking about setting intention, it is actually a great opportunity to know your true self better.

The intention you set will guide your thoughts, attitudes, and actions. It is time to set the intention if you feel like your goals easily change based on the input and opinions from others or if you feel like you are too busy doing things without seeing any progress you make. But how are you going to set the intention?

Steps That Help You Setting Intention and Knowing Yourself Better

Take a book and your favorite pen, that’s an essential part you must take to set the intention. Stationary is going to be a powerful tool to help you know how much progress you have made. Now make sure you follow everything below and set your own intention.

1. Be more grateful

There are things you have and some other things you don’t have. If you keep focusing on those things you don’t have but you want so bad, you will burden your thoughts and won’t make any progress in life. Be more grateful every time you open your eyes in the morning.

This first step in setting the intention will let you focus on many great things you have. Take your journal then write down at least ten good things you are grateful for every morning. Doing this is going to help you see that your life is beautiful and there is nothing you have to change about it.

Write detailed blessings you are thankful for. It is much better to write “I am thankful for the house that is small but I built from my hard work and is able to protect my little family.” It is going to make you feel more positive instead of writing “I am grateful for this small house.” which is going to make you feel bad.

2. Always think in small scale

You need to turn intentions into your habits. If you can do it you will be able to embody your intentions more easily. For example, you want to start a new reading hobby. Then think about the reasonable time amount you will spend to read any book. We are talking about everyday time here.

If you have intention to read but you realize it once a week, you won’t get the reading habit. Instead, your brain will be exhausted and bored, and your goal won’t be reached. If you decide you’ll spend an hour reading your book, try to spend at least half an hour reading every day.

Once your intention becomes your new habit, you will automatically spend more time to read. Consistency is a better way than deciding to spend the whole Sunday every week to read.

3. Be more specific

Oftentimes, the new habits you want to keep are the hardest ones to have. You will enjoy it the most when you just start. If it is hard for you to keep the new habit, write it down specifically so that you can imagine the situation when it happens.

For example, you can write down “I intend to [read a novel] for [thirty minutes] in [my backyard] at [3 p.m.] every [day].” While you write it down you will see yourself holding that novel with a cup of coffee sitting under the tree in your backyard, enjoying your new hobby.

That picture will always appear in your mind every time you read that detailed intention in your journal and it will ease you to keep the new hobby.

4. Let the others to enter

This step of setting intention is especially hard for those who consider themselves introverted. No matter how introverted you are, you need to let at least one person enter your life. Tell her about the new thing you are trying to do. And then figure out some ways to let that person be a part of your new intention.

It is going to help you create an opportunity for a group quality time. Besides, it is going to help you reach your goal more easily and fun. Your friend would love to support you and remind you if you forget to do something you are supposed to do.

5. Celebrate every achievement

One challenge that makes you feel lazy to keep the intentions and the other positive habits is that they don’t come with immediate rewards. Be kind to yourself by preparing a reward you deserve to achieve every time you finish doing that new hobby and if you don’t skip any of them.

For example, if you intend to read a book for thirty minutes a day, you can reward yourself with a nice dinner at the end of the week if you can spend an hour reading every single day for that week. This is going to motivate you and make you work harder to do the intention you have set.

6. Trace your progress

Are you getting close to your goal? Remember the journal you have prepared earlier? Make sure you write down every progress you made. Mark each day you spend more time than you intend to and some other days when you spend less time than you intend to.

This step is going to help you see that you have achieved great progress or you need to work a little harder to be consistent in doing your intention. If you still need some motivation to bring your intention to action, create some index cards or post-it notes then place them where you can see them every time.

Setting intention is a thing you need to take seriously. However, if you are a perfectionist, you may take this too seriously. If you miss something, don’t feel bad. You are a human that can never do perfect things. Forgive yourself and go back to your project. Focus on what you can do now.
